Global South Perspectives Network
Global South Perspectives Network
The result of an international partnership between HumanizaCom , the Foundation for Global Governance and Sustainability (FOGGS), based in Belgium, and the Inclusive Society Institute, based in South Africa, the project consists of the formation and management of the Global South Perspectives Network (GSPN), which includes experts in international affairs, with an emphasis on peace and security, human rights, climate change, disasters, sustainable development, religious conflicts, humanitarian and peace communication, conflict resolution, UN reform and multilateralism. The GSPN experts are mostly based in countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East - three target regions of the project.
Created in 2022, GSPN has promoted projects, in-person and virtual events, and publications. In September 2023, GSPN launched the Report Global South Perspectives Network on Global Governance Reform. The publication was launched during the Workshop Inclusive Global Governance for a Peaceful and Resilient World, held at The Church Centre for the United Nations, in New York. Organized by the three partner institutions, HumanizaCom , FOGGS and ISI, the event featured an opening speech by FOGGS Vice-President Yoriko Yasukawa and a panel chaired by former South African Minister of State Buyelwa Sonjica. Representatives and authors of the publication also participated in the event, including Professor Cilene Victor, leader of HumanizaCom , and Professor Roberto Chiachiri, coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Communication at the Methodist University and director of the UNESCO-UMESP Chair.
The publication presents the impressions of experts from the three target regions, invited to participate in focus groups; the findings of the content analysis of documents that supported the UN reform; and the perceptions of more than 500 people, from 55 countries, who were interviewed through a survey-type research, translated into seven languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Arabic, Turkish and Farsi.
This action, including the production of the document and associated events, was financed by the Global Challenges Foundation, within the scope of the Global Resilience Council project, coordinated by FOGGS.
In 2024, this international partnership enabled Professor Cilene Victor to participate in the UN Civil Society Conference, held in Nairobi, Kenya, as part of the events related to UN reform. In the same year, under the coordination of the Inclusive Society Institute (ISI), the document Reflections on the Zero Draft of the Pact for the Future was published and the workshop Zero Draft on the Future of Global Governance was held.
In the years since its formation, the Global South Perspectives Network has been submitting individual papers from its members and proposing panels at the annual meetings (2023, 2024 and 2025) of the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS). At the 2025 edition of the ACUNS event, researchers from GSPN will lead two panels, including one dedicated to journalism in the climate emergency, “Development and Climate Justice in the Global South: Perspectives from Local Journalism”, with researchers from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Iran and Ghana.
